ROOT CANAL THERAPY IN SANTA ROSA
Beneath its enamel and dentin, a tooth has a pulp chamber that consists of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. Additionally, canals of pulp run through the roots of the tooth, connecting to the gums and the rest of the body. In cases where the pulp is affected due to tooth decay, infections or fractures, we may recommend root canal therapy. We replace the pulp with a biocompatible material, saving the tooth from extraction. Then we finalize the restoration with a dental crown. A root canal may require several appointments to completely correct the problem and save the tooth.
Although root canals are often associated with pain, they actually relieve an agonizing toothache or infection. They also prevent the spread of infection to the jawbone, gums and even other body organs such as the heart. In extreme cases, untreated root canals in the lower molars can result in a life-threatening condition known as Ludwig’s angina. Ludwig’s angina is a serious, potentially life-threatening connective tissue infection on the floor of the mouth, usually occurring in adults with dental infections. If left untreated, it may obstruct airways, necessitating a tracheostomy to allow breathing.
